The 2016 ½ oz American Gold Walking Liberty Half-Dollar Coin celebrates the most iconic design in American History.

In 1907 Augustus St. Gaudens began a trend of featuring Lady Liberty in full-body designs instead of portrait design. Adolph Weinman contributed to this movement and created his renowned Walking Liberty design in silver in 1916.

In 2016 the US Mint commemorated the 1916 design by featuring it in gold.

Weinman’s now-iconic Walking Liberty design may have won a contest to replace the half-dollar design from then-Chief Engraver of the United States Mint Charles E. Barber, but it almost didn’t make it into circulation. The US Mint struggled to strike the Walking Liberty design consistently on coin blanks.

The trouble led the mint’s director to consider asking Barber to create his own new design for the half-dollar coin. Eventually the mint carried on with the production of the Walking Liberty Half dollar. Though it never struck well on the coins, it became immensely popular and remained in circulation through 1947.
